Some Great Comedy Writing In Animation

For those of you who’ve missed them, there are two shows that are geared for children but are very sophisticated in the wit and charm department of writing.  One show airs on ABC on Saturday mornings and is called “The Emperor’s New School” based on the Disney feature and cult classic “The Emperor’s New Groove”.  If you want some old time laughs reminiscent of the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, Woody Allen and the classic tv shows like Get Smart, Honeymooners then this cartoon is for you.  Check your local listings for air times.

The second show is “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command”.  This show was also based on a hit film “Toy Story”.  It features everyone’s favorite new age Space Ranger and his fellow Space Rangers as they battle the Evil Emperor Zurg.  The dialogue is so funny you have to watch an episode several times just to get the whole story.  Not only does it feature witty dialogue and writing but guest stars that appeal to all of us.  In one episode the late great Jonathan Harris aka Dr. Zachary Smith of the “Lost In Space” classic show appears as a mad scientist.  It’s totally priceless.  I think the show is out on DVD and if not it should be.  Someone let me know whilst I jet over to Ebay or Amazon to hunt for it. It’s definitely a must have for up and coming comedy writers and shows that animation once again is the place for funny writing that’s not just for kids but for kids of all ages.
